Words from the Editor
Welcome to the inaugural issue of Words on Action, a bi-monthly journal about Action Theater. The idea for this journal came out of a discussion at the advanced Action Theater training in Santa Fe, New Mexico in the summer of 2002. We were chewing on such questions as how to expose this practice to more people throughout the globe, how to foster a sense of community among Action Theater practitioners and, generally, how to give Action Theater more momentum. Thinking of Contact Quarterly's great success as a glue holding the contact improvisation community together and as a medium for the exchange of ideas and inspiration, I wondered whether an Action Theater journal could do the same for us. I now aim to find out! I also envision this journal as a way to keep Action Theater supple, changing and fresh, just as we want an improvisation to be. Ideas can provoke other ideas, perhaps even controversy, debate and resolution. Thoughts crash against each other, releasing energy in the form of new insights into the work, new ways to teach it, to practice it, new ways it can find a niche in the world and serve somebody or something. I hope that you enjoy this and coming issues and that the articles and images inspire and awaken you and draw you further into a sense of community and into the practice of Action Theater. Finally, I would like to acknowledge my collaborator and designer, Jon Weaver, who was instrumental in getting this first issue on the road and has designed a simple yet exquisite look and feel for Words on Action. Read on! Warmly, Jenny Schaffer |
